Fast food blends perfectly well with our lifestyle. It is quick, fills our stomach and can be eaten on-the-go. Subs and sandwiches have become a part of our everyday life due to the very fact that they don’t require any spare minute to be prepared. But are market sold subs and sandwiches healthy as much as they propose to be? Will they not hurt your health in the long run? It is high time that these questions be addressed. We got it touch with a nutritionist to find out whether such fast foods can affect our health and here is the verdict:
02/7Highly processed

HIGHLY PROCESSED: According to sports nutritionist and fitness expert, Poonam Pahuja Duneja, subs and sandwiches are highly processed and contain hidden ingredients which are not safe for our health. “The so-called 9-grain bread cannot be compared to the healthy whole wheat bread available otherwise. It contains harmful ingredients to make the bread tastier.”
03/7Harmful ingredients

HARMFUL INGREDIENTS: Another fact that we came across in our research is that subs and sandwich breads contain ingredients such as bleaching agents, food additives and dough conditioner. All of these make the bread appear fresh but are actually harmful.
04/7Rotten veggies

ROTTEN VEGGIES: Another major reason for these subs to be unhealthy is due to the fact that the vegetables which are included are sliced and chopped in the morning and used until late night. They are stored through the day and sometimes till the next day as well, depending on how fresh they look.
05/7Too many chemicals

TOO MANY CHEMICALS: “The sauces used in subs and sandwiches contain saturated fats and high levels of sodium, sugars, and preservatives. These ingredients can cause an onset of insulin resistance, impaired lipid profile, and atherosclerosis,” states Dr. Duneja. Therefore, the next time you are weighing between ‘healthy’ sauces, think again.
06/7Unhealthy calories

UNHEALTHY CALORIES: Even though subs and sandwiches are made fresh in front of our eyes, they still contain many unhealthy calories which contribute to a bigger waist more than anything else. A typical sub contains no less than 600-800 calories and a sandwich contains no less than 500 calories.
07/7How to make it healthy?

HOW TO MAKE IT HEALTHY? As per Dr. Duneja, the best way of going about satisfying your hunger is by making home cooked food. Another best option if an individual has no choice at all but to eat a sub or sandwich is by sticking to healthier sauces like mustard, sweet onion, vinaigrette, and ranch. You can stick to grilled vegetables or tandoori chicken. If the option exists, tell your server or chef to cut fresh vegetables and include them in your sandwich or sub. To consume fewer calories, share this sub with your friend so that you don't end up over-indulging.
