PGA Golf Odds And Tips At Torrey Pines For 2024 Farmers Insurance Open - Top World News Today (2024)

For the third straight year, the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open is being held Wednesday-Saturday. Max Homa (No. 7) returns to defend his title as one of the favorites, and he’s one of 12 of the top-30 players in the Official World Golf Rankings that will tee it up at Torrey Pines. So will San Diego native Xander Schauffele (No. 5), who’s the highest-ranked player in the field this week. Two other top golfers and favorites with Southern California ties include Patrick Cantlay (No. 6) and Collin Morikawa (No. 12).

Highly-ranked stars who finished top-10 last year returning to take a shot at the title along the longer, grueling South Course at Torrey Pines include: 13th-ranked Keegan Bradley (2nd) and Colin Morikawa (3rd), Sam Ryder, Sahith Theegala (No. 19), Sungjae Im (No. 28), Jason Day (No. 18), Tony Finau (No. 26) and Hideki Matsuyama, who has fallen out of the top 50 to No. 53 in the world.

Of those players, Schauffele, Homa, Day, Finau, Ryder, Matsuyama and Sungjae Im have all posted multiple top-15 finishes in this tournament over the last five years. So have Justin Rose (win 2019), Luke List (win 2022), Billy Horschel and Will Zalatoris.

Last week’s shocking winner of The American Express PGA event at near 500/1 odds, amateur Nick Dunlap, has decided to withdraw from the Farmers Insurance Open after receiving a sponsors exemption previously.

“After a life changing last 24 hours, I’ve decided to withdraw from the Farmers Insurance Open,” said Dunlap in a statement. “I plan to return home to Alabama to be with family, friends and teammates. Thank you to Farmers Insurance and American Express for giving me these opportunities.”

Golf Courses and Odds to Win Farmers Insurance Open

Torrey Pines North Course is a Par 72 playing to 7,258 yards with no water. It’s only played for Round 1 on Wednesday. The tough South Course is Par 72 and 7,765 yards with water in play on just one hole. The Torrey Pines South Course was the longest on Tour last year at the same distance, and the course also features some of the smaller greens on tour averaging just 5,000 square feet to tie for 6th among primary courses on the tour. The fairways and rough are Ryegrass overseed. The greens are Poa annua, and often a distinctly tougher and bumpier surface to handle for more players. Torrey Pines has proven annually to be a most difficult course on Tour to hit putts inside 15 feet.

Despite a number of top players venting their frustrations about the Poa greens at Torrey Pines during the 2008 U.S. Open, Tiger Woods made a 12-foot knuckling birdie putt on the 72nd hole to force an 18-hole playoff with Rocco Mediate, which Woods would ulimately win.

Golf Picks, Props and Stats

Jason Day is a leading contender to target this week. He’s not only won here in 2015 and 2018, but the 36-year-old Aussie has two other top-5 finishes since 2019 and also finished T7 last year despite shooting 73 on Saturday. This tournament started a strong run of golf last year for Day, who posted four straight top-10 finishes starting with the Farmers.

Torrey Pines has provided plenty of positive experiences for Day, who has joined Malbon Golf and is sporting new golf attire and style. His course credentials are impeccable, and the South Course matches strongly with his long drives and high approaches. Add in Day’s near field-best combination of scrambling, around the green and his strength putting on Poa, and it won’t be surprising to see Day with a later tee-time Sunday as he make a push towards another title at Torrey.

Max Homa and huge longshot Maverick McNealy are two of the best putters on Poa, and McNealy’s around the green game is strong too. But MM tore a ligament in his left shoulder last February, and was not the same falling from 26th in the FedEx Cup Standings to out of action missing five months from June through November. He also fell from 61st in the world rankings last year at this event, to No. 200 currently and has not found his groove yet in four events since returing to the Tour in November.

Sahith Theegala is from Fullerton and played college golf at Pepperdine. He has loads of experience on the course as a youngster and played three junior world championships at Torrey Pines. In two starts as a professional on Tour at Torrey Pines, he’s finished T25 and T4 last year.

Tony Finau ranks No. 86 in this field in putting on Poa over his last 36 rounds, and even worse putting overall with his struggles going back to last May. But the 34-year-old has had strong success in this event with four top-6 finishes since 2017 plus a T9 last year.

Harris English had hip surgery in 2022 and struggled to find his groove until last March and really played better starting in May. His strokes gained stats continue to improve and his around the green play and putting on Poa are very solid – both top-10 in this field over his last 36 rounds. English teed off the year with a pair of top-15 finishes in Hawaii, and he did have a pair of top-10 finishes in this event at Torrey Pines more than five years ago.
