Deposit Cash into Fidelity Cash Management Account via ATM
Postby southerndoc »
Does anyone know if you can deposit cash/checks at any ATM (i.e., Bank of America) into Fidelity's cash management accounts via ATM card?
I routinely deposit checks/cash into my BofA accounts and would like to move to everything being at Fidelity. I need the ability to deposit cash though.

Not that I'm aware of. After closing my BofA account I opened a checking account at my local credit union in addition to the Fidelity CMA. If I need to deposit cash (happened once in the last eight years), I go to my credit union branch office.

I have checking accounts at Ally (direct deposit & bill pay), Fidelity (checkwriting & domestic ATM), Schwab (international ATM use), and a local B&M bank (no fees and minimums) for safe deposit box, notary, and dollar coin purchases for the tooth fairy (just bought some 15 minutes ago, actually).
But I still use the oldest of my current checking accounts, at DCU (everyone can join, and there are no fees and minimums), for mobile deposit (instant acceptance and availability in many cases, unlike Ally; also, Ally doesn't accept money orders via mobile deposit) and cash ATM deposits at 3rd party ATMs. I believe it is the only checking account of the listed above that accepts deposits at 3rd party ATMs. I can then transfer it to Ally or Fidelity.
I know, five is a lot of checking accounts, but they each have their unique strengths that I enjoy.

To deposit checks, download the fidelity app, sign the back with your name and “for deposit to fidelity only”and take a picture of both sides. They usually upload immediately with no problems.

Got the checks covered. Still need cash deposits, so won't be able to close my BofA accounts. Was hoping to do so.

Nope. Most people who switch to online banking keep an account at a brick and mortar CU or bank with a low minimum for cash deposits/withdrawls (I've got an old TD bank account with a $100 minimum balance hanging around).

Not true, I don't have a brick and mortar bank. I'll spend the cash. If it is too much I'll find other things to do with it.

I have Schwab online bank checking account and I am able to deposit cash by purchasing a money order at the post office and depositing the money order using the Schwab app. I don't think that you can deposit money orders with the Fidelity CMA though, after all, it's not a bank account, whereas the Schwab account is a bank account.

We are in the same boat. Haven't had a brick and mortar bank account in years. Kids the same way. Daughter sold a bunch of stuff on craigslist and uses less cash (none) than we do (almost none). She convinced my wife to take the cash and write her a check. So, now we have almost $1,000 sitting in the safe. It will be there awhile...

You can't even deposit cash directly at a Fidelity branch office. I would suggest opening an account with a local bank that would be convenient for you to make cash deposits. Then just link that to your Fido account, and you should be all set.
If you watch your pennies, your dollars will take care of themselves.

The Fidelity debit card is issued by PNC Bank, but trying to deposit cash at a PNC ATM failed. I keep a zero fee Huntington checking account for the rare cash deposits.

Yes, this is a general (but to me manageable and acceptable) downside to Schwab, Fidelity, Ally, and others. AFAIK the only way to get "cash" directly into them is to buy a money order with the cash and then deposit that in a branch or by mail.
Much better to have a B&M bank account hanging around for this purpose, or maybe a local credit union (which can have some handy benefits form time to time). Deposit the cash there and then ACH it to Fidelity or what have you.
The only "online bank" I'm aware of that is an exception to this rule is Capital One 360. I've successfully deposited cash into my CO360 accounts using my CO360 debit card at B&M Capital One Bank ATMs.

I still keep my old BoA account mostly to deposit my "piggy bank" every couple of months. Quite a site, takes about 10-15 min to hand fill out the forms, get these big rugged plastic bags set up and then about 2-3 weeks to see the deposit. I feel your pain The good news is we have a brand new bank being build just down the hill from us so I can get some free cupcakes and maybe finally get a safe deposit box.

In the case of Schwab you can also deposit the money order using the mobile app, there is no need to go to a branch or send it in by mail. To my knowledge Fidelity does not accept money orders for deposit.
