What is a Torpedo Catalytic Converter?

What Are Torpedo Catalytic Converters? (1)

Torpedo catalytic converters come from the Ford Company vehicles and are generally used on their Model F and E series Trucks & Vans. They are usually very large in size due to having multiple “biscuits” or honeycombs inside.

With a range of prices all over the board, we have found Torpedo catalytic converters to be both fun and frustrating, all in the same breath. These units look like giant torpedos, which is why they are labeled as such.

Coming exclusively off of Ford vehicles, these units have a very distinct serial code hidden behind the shield you need to look for. These serial codes will have three parts to them and will look like 1C2C 5E212 AAor something like that. Each of those three sets of numbers/letters will unlock the value of these torpedos and can be found behind the slow that is located on the shield of the units.

The serial codes rarely will be in the above order but maybe a little jumbled. We always recommend removing the shields or opening up the large slot on the shield to uncover the entire serial code. The converters range in value depending on how many bricks (honeycombs) are inside them and the current market prices.

Two very important things to look at when looking at your Torpedo Catalytic Converter are:

  1. The number of “bricks” it contains – you can see this by removing the shield and counting.
  2. The serial numbers – this is so important in determining the value of these catalytic converters; one letter difference at the end could be a significant price difference.

How To Find Torpedo Cat Serial Numbers

To find the entire serial number, you will need to cut back the shield above the slot opening, where you can view the other numbers to display the full serial number.

Once you cut back the shield above the slot, you can use steel wool to clean any rust or build-up and find the number.
