What is happening with verizon email? ›

Verizon has retired our email service. We have completed our notifications regarding this change, and customers no longer have the option to keep their Verizon.net email address or extract and move their data to another service provider. For support and help with your email, please contact your email provider directly.

Any verizon.net email addresses not migrated to the AOL platform before December 5, 2017 will no longer be available for use. All verizon.net email, calendar and address book content not migrated to AOL or a third party before December 5, 2017 will be deleted from our systems.

Your Verizon email account was merged into AOL several years back, and subsequently all moved/sold off to Yahoo in 2021. So Yahoo now runs the Verizon.net, aol.com and yahoo.com email services, as well as other domain names. You can find a complete list of domains that Yahoo controls here.

As Yahoo (2021–present)

On May 3, 2021, Verizon announced that the Verizon Media would be acquired by Apollo Global Management for roughly $5 billion, and would simply be known as Yahoo following the closure of the deal, with Verizon retaining a minor 10% stake in the new group.

As of July 2012, there were 24 million AOL Mail users. By 2021, the number of paying users had dropped to 1.5 million. On March 16, 2017, Verizon, which had acquired AOL in 2015, announced that it would discontinue its in-house email services for internet subscribers, and migrate all customers to AOL Mail.

AOL email service is not being discontinued. It's a scam. An online article reports, “An AOL mail phishing campaign is underway to steal users' login name and password by warning recipients that their account is about to be closed.” Don't fall victim to a scam.
