HOUSTON – Energy firms added five drilling rigs to the U.S. rig count in the past week.
In its most recent report, Baker Hughes said the combined number of oil and gas rigs rose by five in the week that ended Feb. 25, to total 650.
A year ago, the rig count total in the U.S. was 402.
Rigs on land in the last week totaled 635, an increase of five over the previous week. There were three rigs counted in inland waters and 12 counted offshore. Rigs drilling for oil in the U.S. totaled 522, an increase of two over the previous week; there were 127 counted drilling for gas, an increase of three; one was classified as a “miscellaneous” rig.
Traditional vertical wells being drilled totaled 26, while there were 31 identified as directional and 595 identified as horizontal.
The rig count in Oklahoma declined by two to total 51, Baker Hughes reported. There were 312 rigs counted in Texas, 95 in New Mexico, 54 in Louisiana and 33 in North Dakota. Fewer numbers were counted in Alaska, California, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming.
Baker Hughes has issued the rotary rig counts as a service to the petroleum industry since 1944.
