Can I use IXL as a full curriculum? ›

Flexible platform. There's no one right way to use IXL—only the right way for you. We designed IXL to be open and flexible: you have access to our entire curriculum and can adapt it to meet the needs of your unique classroom and students.

IXL is a great tool to practice and reinforce topics. For math, it would work well as one of several stations that include manipulatives, group whiteboard practice, and other applied methods.

Students will need to answer as many as 10 questions correctly in a row to achieve mastery. For most skills on IXL, students will have to complete a minimum of 28 questions to earn a SmartScore of 100. When a student achieves a score of 100 on IXL, you can feel confident that they have truly mastered that skill.

Overall, we like IXL Learning. It's a good option if you're looking for an all-in-one homeschool curriculum or just a way to supplement your child's education. However, like most curricula, it won't be a good fit for everyone.

While we offer memberships for online practice that are widely used by teachers and homeschool parents to support their teaching, we are not an accredited school and are not authorized to verify or issue school credits. Completing skills on IXL will not equate to proof of grade completion or transcripts.

For both math and ELA, the IXL Real-Time Diagnostic accurately predicted the grade-level proficiency for about 80% of students as determined by subsequent PSSA tests. Students with IXL Diagnostic math scores at or above grade level were 35 times more likely to reach or exceed the PSSA math proficiency standard.

A skill is mastered when the SmartScore reaches 100, but the number of questions it takes to master a skill varies with every student. To continuously motivate students, IXL recommends setting other practice milestones along the way to mastery.

The SmartScore ranges from 0-100, but it is not a percentage score. It's calculated based on question difficulty, answer accuracy, and consistency. When your child is getting the hang of the concept, their SmartScore will increase, and their questions will get harder.

When students first use the Diagnostic, we recommend they aim to diagnose until their complete diagnostic data is revealed—for most students, this will be around 45 minutes per subject. After that, we suggest answering 10–15 diagnostic questions each week to help keep their levels and recommendations up to date.

IXL recommends that students initially aim to diagnose until they reveal complete diagnostic data. This should take about 45 minutes to 1 hour per subject and can be done over multiple sessions.

Is IXL stressful for kids? ›

One of the more controversial issues with IXL is that kids often complain of feeling stressed or anxious while using it, usually because of the drill and adaptive nature of the questions.

A student's diagnostic level represents their working grade level. So a level of 400 represents a readiness to start working on 4th-grade skills, and a level of 450 means the student is about halfway through the 4th-grade curriculum.

A 750 indicates the student is halfway through the grade-seven level.

Grade level guide: 100 = 1st grade, 200 = 2nd grade, 300 = 3rd grade, 400 - 4th grade, 500 = 5th grade, 600 = 6th grade, 700 = 7th grade, 800 = 8th grade, and 900 = 9th grade. By clicking on the IXL image above or the word IXL, students will be forwarded to the log in page.

Accurate assessment

Built on top of IXL's comprehensive curriculum, the Real-Time Diagnostic is able to assess students at a deep level across every concept in the K–12 curriculum. You'll get an accurate portrait of their overall knowledge, as well as their knowledge levels in key strands.

Whenever you exit a skill you are working on, IXL remembers where you stopped! The next time you sign in and return to that skill, the last question encountered will be ready and waiting. Your practice results and current score are also automatically saved.

The Impact of IXL on Math Learning in Minnesota

This study found that IXL improves student achievement, especially in Title I schools. Grade cohorts that used IXL performed better on the MCA, achieving proficiency rates 1 to 4 percentage points higher than non-IXL cohorts.

These levels range from 0-1300, with 0-50 representing pre-K, 50-100 kindergarten, and 1300 representing the end of 12th grade/ready for college.

As always, a diagnostic level indicates a student's working grade level—for example, a level of 800 indicates readiness to work on eighth grade level skills. When the numbers appear as a range, this means that the Diagnostic is still narrowing down the student's exact learning level.

A score of 500 indicates readiness to begin working on 5th grade skills.

IXL's diagnostic scores correspond to grade levels for easy interpretation. For example, a score of 500 equals beginning level 5th grade, and a 550 equals 50% mastery of 5th grade standards.

Can teachers see how long you take on IXL? ›

You can hide the timer for all of your students, specific classes, or individual students. Time is still tracked by IXL, and you can access that information in IXL Analytics.

IXL has a free practice limit of 20 problems per day, and is a resource with a user-friendly interface easily accessible for extra practice at home.

Using the Student Score Chart

Here's how IXL defines each category: Mastered -- student has a SmartScore of 100. Excellence -- student has a SmartScore of at least a 90. Practiced -- student has answered at least 1 question and the SmartScore is less than 90.

The average score teachers assign to reach is 80-85 and above. IXL is good for studying for tests or quizzes but it also causes stress and anxiety if it takes more than 30 minutes to reach 80 and above.

For maximum impact on student learning outcomes, IXL recommends that students aim to reach proficiency on at least two IXL skills per week.

Complete and aligned

IXL's curriculum is fully aligned to the Common Core, state standards for all 50 states, and popular textbook series. For any standard, any lesson, teachers can turn to IXL for the content they need to help their students.

Prior research shows that students spend about 15-20 minutes on IXL to reach proficiency in one skill (An, 2021a). Thus, in order to achieve the goal of 2 SP/week, students will need to practice on IXL for 30-40 minutes per week, in one or more learning sessions.

And after receiving their initial learning levels, they'll only need to answer 10-15 questions per week in the diagnostic to keep their levels and recommendations fully up to date. Encourage your child to routinely practice in the diagnostic so they can see how much they've grown!

IXL is the best for easy to find practice for math standards. Freckle has more in depth features and integrates with other Renaissance products well, but can be hard to learn or use. Prodigy is a fun math game platform that works well for extra student practice or learning, but isn't as targeted as IXL.
