Will they define your future? The answer is no, and you should not worry too much about it, but there are a couple of things you should keep in mind before choosing your IGCSE subjects. Most of the time, your IGCSE grades will not matter much, as universities will care mainly about your IB or A-Level grades.

YES. Colleges in the USA require your high school (9–12th grades, all four years) academic GPA as one of the admission requirements for undergraduate programs.

Most universities accept IGCSE as a completion of middle school and still require students to complete high school before applying to the university. After completing IGCSE, you can either take A-levels or complete an internationally accepted diploma like IB to be eligible to apply for undergraduate courses.

None of our courses have a specific GCSE requirement; however, there are some parts of our admissions process that use GCSE grades to contextualise applicants' performance, and we are not able to use other Level 2 qualifications (or equivalent) to replicate those measures for students not taking GCSEs.

It is offered by three different exam boards including Cambridge Examinations, Pearson Edexcel and Oxford AQA. Students with IGCSE qualifications are recognised worldwide including at top universities such as Oxford, Harvard, MIT, Stanford, etc.

There are no GCSE (or equivalent) requirements for entry to Cambridge. GCSE results are looked at as a performance indicator, but within the context of the performance of the school/college where they were achieved.

University Recognition

For example, leading US and Canadian universities require Cambridge International AS & A Levels, but some US and Canadian colleges and universities will accept students with five Cambridge IGCSEs at grade C or above. In the UK, Cambridge IGCSE is accepted as equivalent to GCSE.

Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge O Level

Leading universities in the US require Cambridge International AS & A Levels for admissions, but some colleges and universities will accept students with five Cambridge IGCSEs or Cambridge O Levels at grade C or above.

Typically offered in early high school, Cambridge Pre-Advanced (IGCSE) prepares students for college-level courses and exams. A full complement of Cambridge IGCSE courses is equivalent to a US high school diploma.

So how important are GCSEs to an Oxford University application? Oxford, like most universities, do take GCSE results into account in its admissions process, and having a high proportion of 7, 8, and 9 grades at GCSE does make your application more competitive.

However Oxford usually only has around 3,300 places each year so even excellent grades will not guarantee you an offer. Offers for Oxford places are between A*A*A and AAA at A-level, depending on the course. (See course pages.) See a list of Oxford courses with conditional offers including at least one A*.

No, Harvard does not require students to have taken the GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) qualification to apply for admission. Although a GCSE is an important academic qualification for students studying in the UK, it is not part of the application process for Harvard.
