FedEx Employee Benefits

What kind of employee benefits does FedEx give? Are there special seats on their aircraft that employees can stand by for, or is that only for commericial airlines? If so, is it for pilots only, or do all employees recieve it? What about insurance, etc.? Thanks.

FedEx use to allow people to travel for free on the company's jets, which pretty much can get you anywhere in the world and you don't have to worry about a flight being full like on a regular. One of the cons however is that there is little comfort and the planes often fly and inconvenient hours (ie in the middle of the night) and there can be unexpected delays, stops and whatever else you can think of. Unfortunately an attempted hijacking out of Memphis drastically effected the company.
Pilots benefit however from the ability to ride jumpseat on many other carriers. So pilots pretty much have full travel benefits, but other employees can also travel at discounts.
Or at least that is what I was told. When I took some community college courses, FedEx was actively trying to recruit people to work the graveyard shift at the airport. FedEx pays very well and gives benefits. If you want to be with a company in the aviation industry, then it is a great choice since it is financially healthy, expanding and pays well unlike almost every commercial airline

First of all you need be 18, have 10 years of verifiable job and residence history in the U.S. (No residence outside the of country, at all.)
There are seat available to jumpseat on, however, jumpseat is suspended at the present time. Pilots and those staging may still use the privilage.
Yes insurance is provided, along with making vision and dental available to full time as well part time employment.

Jumpseat was suspended after 9/11, it had nothing to do with the attempted hijacking. International jumpseat was also suspended, last June I believe it was, domestic jumpseat was reinstated only to be cut off again a few months ago.

UPS has the same kind of beni's: great insurance (at UPS it is available after 35 days of work, at
FX I have heard it is 6 months) UPS offers tutition remb and dental, prescription, vision, etc. No flight discount though I teach math during the day and work a quick couple hour shift at UPS to keep my wife's insurance while she finishes pharmacy school.
Anyone got a story link on that hijacking out of mem? I have never heard of it.

FedEx Flight 705 was an attempted hijacking of a McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 on April 7, 1994 by Auburn Calloway, a FedEx employee who was due to be fired for lying on his résumé about his previous flying experience with the United States Navy. He boarded the California-bound aircraft, which was loaded with electronic equipment bound for Silicon Valley, intending to murder the flight crew with hammers, and then use the aircraft for a kamikaze attack on FedEx
HQin Memphis, Tennessee. The reason for using hammers was so that the injuries inflicted would resemble those occurring in a plane crash - Calloway wanted to disguise the attack as an accident so that his family would benefit from his life insurance policy. As a last resort however, he was also armed with a speargun, smuggled on board in a guitar case.
By means of extreme aerial maneuvers the flight crew eventually succeeded in restraining Calloway, though all three crew members were critically injured and would never fly again. The plane landed safely at Memphis International Airport. As the police stormed the plane, the fight was still going on and the co*ckpit interior was covered with blood.
Auburn Calloway was sentenced to life without parole for attempted murder and attempted air piracy, which he is serving at the United States Penitentiary, Atlanta federal prison in Atlanta, Georgia.

Health insurance for UPS activates after 6 months in these parts....

Other than those of interest here in a.net (jumpseating),
FXoffers a huge array of benefits, which vary from country to country; in general terms, they widely exceed those mandated by law anywhere; they usually include private medical insurance, generous student allowances or scholarships, access to an on-line virtual university, discounts programs, savings funds, credit unions, etc.

This is harder and harder to do these days since the cargo companies have become so expansive. Those seats (and any others) are often full of their own employees moving them around within their system, so they don't have to pay to airline them.

Discounts are good on US domestic flt & airlines.
For the rest of the world, it is often cheaper to go to a travel agency. You will pay less, without the stress of being bumped.
About the jumpseat, from what I have heard, Sep11 is just an excuse used by the pilot union. In fact, they use this as a pressure on F. Smith, and some even consider that tey are so important person, that it would be a shame for them to fly their ground colleagues. They just forget that without ground staff collecting packages, loading them in containers, then in the plane, they have no reason to fly.
(for instance, even after jumpseat resumed on US domestic flts after 01, 70 % of the non plots who wanted to fly for business reasons were refused by the crew, just to force
to pay airline tickets)
Of course, this attitude is by a minority of pilot. But most of them having a lot of power through their union

Correct and it was re-instated on June, 1, 2004 but cancelled again. I believe it dealt with the lack of good criminal background chks and
ID. I'm pretty sure business j/s is still available .
The name of the book about Calloway is called "Hijacked". Actually he should have been the s/o turning back to calif. but due to longer duty times the inbound crew were taken off the flight and a fresh crew put on so Calloway got on the j/s.

The whole deal with suspension of jump seat privileges does originate from a bunch of package handlers that were hired at the
LAXramp. they didn't have extensive criminal background checks done. they tried to fly and several had criminal charges pending. i had to go through an entire series of hoops with homeland security and the FBI for
FXjust to get unescorted ramp access...doesn't seem fair to punish us all...

Not to sound sarcastic or anything...but I think it'd be funny (or at least sound odd) to tell your family that you're coming on a FedEx plane. "Come pick me up in the cargo area!".

Too bad you've confused 10% facts with 90% rumor and really have painted a very distorted picture .I don't know where your stats came from but I never saw this in my co*ckpit and I can tell you that there were/ are many more facets to this than what you have projected. You sound like a ramper that loves to believe any rumor that portraits the pilots as evil prima donnas that had just as soon see the co. fail. sorry...CC

The "prima donna" title does fit the pilots here at Fedex. But hey,they fly the planes good for them. I think that the jump seat bennie was way over played by Fedex anyway. I used to jump seat in the old days when I was single But now I have 3 kids and a wife so jump seating wasn't much of a bennie to me anyway... Fedex is a great company to work for even without the jump seating.

95% of the pilots do not consider themselves "prima donnas". We do a great job day in, day out, everywhere and anywhere in the world and pride ourselves in getting the job done. Most of us know it takes hard work from from every dept. to make the system work. It's a lot different being on the inside looking out than outside looking in and I'm sure you could tell me the same thing from a line maint. point of view.

I am going to have to second the statement by Teva, I know of several people who were denied business jumpseat by captains, including members of management. CosmicCruiser, drop me an email, I would like to meet you during the hub turn some time. You seem like a very level headed person, I'd like to hear some stories you've got flying our heavy metal around.
