If you have been online in the last year or so, you have likely seen memes, especially on Facebook, that suggest that cord cutting costs are the same or more than cable TV.
For example, one I saw this week said that Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Sling TV, and Netflix cost the same as Cable. So let us break this down and see if that is correct.
- Amazon Prime costs $14.99 a month
- Disney+ costs $7.99 a month
- Netflix costs $6.99 a month
- Sling TV costs $40 a month
- Hulu costs $5.99 a month
Total: $75.99
Wait, what about the internet you need the internet for all of those services. Right now, T-Mobile Home Internet costs $50 a month. The total cost of TV plus Internet for cord cutters is $125.96 a month.
So wait, $125.96 seems to be a lot of money it looks like you could get cable TV cheaper than that. Well, according to a recent report, the average cost of cable TV packages is now $217.42 a month in the United States as of 2022.
That means cord cutters save, on average, even with all of those services, $91.46 a month. That works out to be an average savings of over $1,000 a year vs. paying for cable TV.
One thing a lot of the meme creators seem to ignore is the fact that most of the content they list here is not available on cable TV. For example, all the new Star Wars shows are not on cable TV, the new season of King of The Hill will only stream on Hulu, and Netflix shows are only available on Netflix.
Also, Amazon Prime offers a lot more than just TV and free shipping. With Amazon Prime, you also get free music, magazines, and a whole lot more.
So remember, next time you see one of those terrible memes online, make sure to show them how the math they list doesn’t work out.
