If you’ve landed on this post then I suppose you’ve asked yourself what things you can easily quit now to save money?

You want to know more about where you could be saving and you’re tired of financial strain?

I understand completely!

A few years ago I felt like I was going broke but wasn’t sure what I was doing wrong.

And I had to ask myself questions like:

Do I need a new pair of shoes or handbag that just caught my eye?

Is it necessary to take taxis every week?

Does my daily takeaway coffee habit help my wallet?

Am I impulse buying without realizing?

And I have to say I was doing all of those things without thinking twice.

As it turned out, this was a HUGE mistake.

Now, after making some changes, I’m saving a healthy sum of money every month and finally building real wealth.

This is largely due to the online jobs I’ve been doing and the help of learning how to use a budget that suits me.

But…

It wasn’t always like this!

So, what do I tell people who come to me and ask “How do you save money?” and “How do you stop spending on unnecessary items?”

What I Do To Help Me Save More

So what are the things you can easily quit now to save money? And how do you get started with healthier money habits?

Firstly, I use a budget and track my goals that I personally put together myself.

I’d be lost without my budget as it helps me to see what I’m spending money on day to day and what I can cut back on.

Secondly, when I realized I was overspending and was out of control with my finances, I knew I needed some professional guidance. Some help to get me out of this awful financial rut I was in!

So while I was earning free gift cards and getting paid for side jobs I also came across Empower (formerly Personal Capital).

It’s possible you’ve heard of it but for those new in the budgeting world, it’s essentially a really handy personal finance tool.

Some things you can do with Empower are:

  • Manage savings with a savings planner
  • Create a budget by setting monthly spending targets
  • Get an accurate view of your net worth – what you have minus what you owe
  • Plan for your retirement
  • Manage cash flow by seeing what’s coming in and going out every month

Empower is one of the best and FREE resources that will help you track yourfinances. By putting your accounts together, you can track your savings, investments, cash flows and your net worth all in the one place. Empower can also alert you when your bills are due. With that said, this free tool allows you to track and view all your finances in one place.

Mindset is hugely important when it comes to spending. This is because you need to be aware of where your money is going so you can look at areas where you can save.

So without further ado, let’s get into the 5 things you can easily quit now to save money!

1. Save on Food

5 Things You Can Easily Quit Now To Save Money Fast! (1)

Perhaps one of the easiest ways to cut back and save is on food.

Why?

Because with a range of handy apps like Fetch Rewards, Rakuten etc. You can earn cash back on your every day spending.

In a world that’s getting more and more expensive to live in, these apps and sites are a huge blessing!

So while you’re not actually ‘quitting’ anything here as such, you are saving on every day items.

I personally used the spare cash that I earned from cashback apps to boost my savings.

The following apps are the best and most trustworthy to use that offer cashback and gift cards for spending through them:

  1. Be Frugal
  2. Fetch Rewards
  3. Rakuten
  4. Swagbucks

These apps are completely free to download and use, have high ratings on Trustpilot and are actually worth using! I highly recommend you start using cashback apps to earn money back on your everyday purchases.

2. Cancel Unused Subscriptions

5 Things You Can Easily Quit Now To Save Money Fast! (2)

These days it’s so easy to sign up to everything. Especially with free trial periods and offers everywhere you turn!

But it can be hard to keep track of all your subscriptions, all your free trial periods etc.

Before you know it you’re paying for unnecessary subscriptions and throwing money down the drain!

Which we do not want…

We’ve been caught in the trap of “I’ll start a free trial and cancel later” one too many times! Then you forget you’re paying for multiple subscription services and money is going down the drain because you’re not even using them all.

So, it’s a good idea to start cancelling subscription services you aren’t using. These could be streaming services or apps you’re paying for but no longer use or need.

Did you know that there are apps that will find and cancel any unused/unwanted subscriptions?

That’s right!

Say hello to Rocket Money, a clever little app that helps you find and track your subscriptions, expenses and charges.

One of the best things about this neat little app is that their team will negotiate your bills for you. Yep! Their negotiators will work for you to find the best possible rate.

So you don’t need to worry about doing the work! You can start saving on your bills, having more cash leftover at the end of your pay with the help of Rocket Money.

Oh and they have excellent reviews on Trustpilot, so you can rest easy knowing your personal details are safe.

You can sign up with Rocket Money for FREE here and start putting money back into your wallet!

Please note that this app is intended for people who reside in the United States only.

According to Statista, statistics suggest that Americans will spend 3 hours and 17 minutes watching TV every day.

So aside from saving money by cancelling subscriptions, you’re also freeing up time to do other things while trying to save.

Instead of watching shows you could be using your time to earn gift cards, or start a side hustle.

We have plenty of ideas on ways to earn extra income!

3. Swap Your Gym Memberships

5 Things You Can Easily Quit Now To Save Money Fast! (3)

Aw but I like going to the gym! I hear you say.

I toootally get it!

But the thing is, fitness is the perfect area for saving money. Reason being, there are so many options to workout from home with free fitness apps these days.

I save $720 a year from switching my gym membership to working out from home. So for me it’s a no brainer. It doesn’t have to be exercising in your home either, of course. You can get some fresh air and go for a walk or run in your local park, go hiking, inline skating, swimming, the options are endless.

You can check out my post 10 FREE Things To Do During a No Spend Challenge, for more ideas.

4. Eating Out

5 Things You Can Easily Quit Now To Save Money Fast! (4)

My husband and I used to eat out a couple of times a week and didn’t think much of it.

But when we started looking at areas where we could save money, we were in for a rude shock!

We found out we were spending a stupid amount a year on food and wine…

Seriously, once we did the math we worked out that we were spending around $7,000 a year on eating out!

It’s never a huge amount at the time, until you add it all up. And when you’re trying to budget and save, this is one area you can cut back on.

So we decided to start cooking more at home, and treating ourselves once a month rather than twice a week, and we saved SO MUCH!

5. Stop Buying Hard Cover Books

5 Things You Can Easily Quit Now To Save Money Fast! (6)

I love opening and reading a hard cover book as much as the next person.

But…

It’s an extra cost you don’t need, and not so good for the environment.

And also, if you have heaps of them, they take up space and become dust collectors. Which isn’t great for allergies!

I decided to do a book cull recently, and haven’t looked back!

Now I only really borrow books from the library, or download e-books on my devices.

Did you know that you can sell used books on Amazon? You sure can! Check out How to Sell Books on Amazon to learn more about it.

Final Words

I know first hand that saving money isn’t always a breeze, and you need to be disciplined to reach certain money goals.

But when you cut back on just a few unnecessary items and get creative with other ways to make money in your spare time, you’ll start to see positive changes.

Just knowing some of the ways you can make adjustments to your spending is a start.

So it’s time to stop buying things and start saving money because you deserve better than consuming everything in sight.

Saving money has a lot of benefits aside from the obvious financial ones. The more you save, the more you’ll have for future expenses or investments, whether they’re retirement funds, saving for a much needed vacation or your kid’s college tuition.

I sincerely hope knowing these things to quit now to save money helps your money woes.
